Ways To Teach Your Kids Compassion Towards Animals

Children naturally have a fondness for animals. Studies prove that children who are compassionate towards animals grow up to be compassionate adults. They tend to have better self-esteem, self-worth, immunity, and respect for fellow living beings.  Children become more sensitive when they get support for their love for animals. Therefore, let us learn tips to teach your kids compassion towards animals.

Ways of raising your child to compassion towards animals –

Charity begins at home

If you spot a stray dog near your home, most likely your first reaction is to chase it away. Instead of teaching compassion and kindness, parents unknowingly teach children to throw stones and sticks at dogs to shoo them away. When adults mistreat animals, it sends out a very negative message. Treating all animals with empathy will ensure your child grows up empathetic, compassionate, and protective towards all creatures.

Mind your language

Firstly, do not use phrases like, “he is a donkey!” while referring to people and their actions. Instead, talk to children about animals, their feelings, and how they deserve to be treated. By having positive discussions with children, you are nurturing a sense of connection in them towards animals.

Volunteering

Secondly, help your child extend care for animals that are injured or need a home. Introduce them to organizations that could use their helping hand in administering and delivering services. Animal care groups meet regularly to provide for street animals and educate people on animal abuse. As children gain experience with animals, they learn about their different needs and behavior and make their observations.

Visit wildlife centers

Zoos and sanctuaries are ideal environments for children to observe and marvel at the animal world. Going on a nature walk and bird watching are opportunities to encourage wildlife sightings and develop their innate love for animals. Observing animals from a distance without disturbing them is a good way of exercising self-restraint and respecting their space.

Learn more

The animal world is always brimming with interesting and fascinating facts. Find books and cartoons with animals as the main characters. When children relate to the issues and feelings of these characters, they begin to empathize with them. Provide them with the informative documentaries available that add to their curiosity and knowledge. The aim is to make children aware of the complexity and largeness of the animal kingdom and develop an appreciation for it.

Clubs and activities at school

In conclusion, a positive attitude towards animals that is initiated at home can be concreted in school with proper measures. Winmore Academy, one of the best CBSE schools in Bangalore, uses nature as a setting to teach about animals and other forms of life. We conduct activities that aim to foster curiosity, spread awareness about animal rights, and develop the quality of empathy. The nature club holds debates and discussions regularly with students to find solutions for animal issues that we face today and approach a more inclusive natural environment.
