Easy Ways to Teach Kids Time Management Skills

Children live in the present. For them, it is the question of doing it now or never. That is why you notice things being misplaced, tasks unfinished and not having enough time for anything. An obvious reaction to this scenario is both the child and the parent chanting “No Time! No Time!” in sheer frustration. Read on to learn about some better alternatives.
It takes children a while to build a sense of time. When they do, you should step in to teach the key skills of planning and prioritizing. Here is how you can help your child with time management skills:

Make a Calendar

The simplest and most interesting of all is to make a calendar with your child. Use keywords like studying, playing, art class, and so on to note activities on particular days. Talk to them about prioritizing and distributing tasks while making the planner so that they are aware of the timeline. A clear idea of activities to finish in a day gives them better control over time.

Teach them to Measure Time

All children who can tell time may not always know to measure time. Help them out by setting up a countdown timer to finish a task. Once they gain a sense of the time segments like an hour, half an hour, or even two minutes, they will find it easier to complete activities in the prescribed time.

Have a Checklist

You may put up a whiteboard or a plain chart paper to make a ‘To Do’ list especially during vacations. It reduces unnecessary stress, increases efficiency, and alleviates boredom. Hold your child accountable to finish their daily tasks and reward them if done before time. You could also rely on the satisfaction they get from striking off the finished activities.

Strict Screen Time

Children, as adults, lose track of time when they are glued to the TV or smartphones. Establish rules for how long they have access to the devices on a daily and weekly basis. Have device-free zones such as during meal-time and family outings. Try to follow the same rules and switch off your phone at night.
