Habits are everyday activities that we do without consciously thinking about it. They are the basis of what constitutes a day and indicators of where we are headed in life.
As they say, good habits start early. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that good habits are inculcated in children at an early age. Here is a checklist of good habits to start with.
Brush twice a day
Whenever your child gets lazy about brushing their teeth, you can brush with them. Other than being a motivation, it teaches them the proper way of brushing. Educate them about the consequences of bad oral hygiene so that it solidifies as a healthy habit.
Eat Healthy
Children are often tempted to grab a pizza or a packet of chips, but you can introduce healthier yet tastier options. If possible, make homemade versions of fast food occasionally and include your child in its cooking process.
Regular physical activity
Not all children are inclined towards sports. But it is necessary for all to be involved in some sort of physical exercise to be active, fit and flexible. Some of the valuable lessons of leadership and team-spirit are learnt from sports activities.
Keep nails short
Nails are vehicles for dirt to enter your child’s body. Small kids tend to put their hands in their mouth. Teach older children to trim their nails – clean and short.
Proper Sleeping Schedule
Ensure that your child sticks to a proper bed-time and wake up time with a good 7 – 8 hours of sound sleep in between. A systematic sleeping pattern is especially useful when they start going to school.
“Please”, “Sorry”, “Thank you”
These three magical words should be used by yourself so that your child will know how important they are. Teach them that respect is given and taken regardless of age. We want our children to be kind and warm-hearted people.
Do not procrastinate
Make it clear that school homework is not for Sunday nights and beds should be made in the morning itself. Teaching them the value of time will reduce procrastination and last-minute stress.
Manage money
If you offer pocket money, teach them to be responsible with it. Once they are old enough, you could give them small amounts of money as rewards for completing tasks while keeping track of their spending. Encourage to save money by buying them a piggy bank.
Do not litter
Whether someone is watching or not, whether it is home or a public place, tell them where the waste should go. Always ask your child to throw trash in the dustbin and keep the surroundings clean.
Sharing is caring
Teach children to be grateful for the people and things they have in their lives. Cultivate the habit of sharing things with people who cannot afford them. Not just material things, but emotions, feelings and experiences should also be shared with the family and friends.
