“There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs.”
Zig Ziglar
Energy and excitement in the young learners are at their highest when they enter the school grounds. But as the day progresses, they begin to struggle with their attention, fidgeting in their seats, twiddling with their pencils, looking at the clock, waiting for the class to wind up or just dozing off during a lesson.
Keeping the students focused, organized and interested during their classes can be challenging but with some well- planned out and creative strategies, students can be helped to overcome this hurdle.
Rested and adequately nourished
The students who attend school after having had adequate sleep at night and a nourishing breakfast are less likely to become distracted during class. Their ability to concentrate is better. The teachers should advise parents to ensure that students comply with these two criteria.
Away from distractions
Teachers should make learning so absorbing that students are not distracted by any visual or audio activity happening outside and backbenchers to do not indulge in whispering.
Indulge in discussions
Active participation of the students with their inquisitive questions and eager answers keeps the class riveted inattentiveness. The teachers can initiate interactive discussions when the class seems disengaged. This would help students stay focused.
Gaming strategies
Gaming strategies in the class can revive waning concentration and restlessness. It is amazing how students who were yawning could spring back to attention with a task turned into an interesting game.
Shorter time-intervals
Students find complicated and repeated work schedules monotonous and at times overbearing. It becomes an uphill task to stay focused and display interest. To counter this challenge the classes should be of shorter duration.
More breaks
Students look forward to leisure periods like games, library, art, craft and music and also laboratory activities. A little activity in the class to rejuvenate the spirits of the students would help bring them back on track to the lessons being taught with renewed vigour.
Questions strategy
When long hours of school become monotonous and students waver in their concentration, introducing‘question strategy’ can restore their lost focus. The children can be asked to fragment their assignment into ‘why what, where, who, how and when’ sections. This approach would seem like a game and would get the work completed speedily and effectively.
